Jerusalem and Amman | 2019
i took a few rolls of kodak portra 35mm film with me to Jerusalem and Amman in 2019, where i spent a few days in each city. amman felt different this time around. it had been 5 years since my last trip. i spent most of my time there sitting with refugees, listening to their stories of survival and heartbreak. so many of them couldn’t even tell me their real names for fear of retribution on their families. it changed how i viewed my own life and my faith. not a day goes by that i don’t think of what they have endured, and yet still persevered in the face of death and loss.
i remember shooting one roll in Jordan, and i changed to my second roll after i crossed the border by bus. It was the strangest thing seeing arabs leave palestine for jordan to fly. my bus went through multiple CHECKPOINTS before we were allowed to enter israeli territory. jerusalem felt so different from what i experienced in amman. it felt like going from the soviet bloc brutalist designs to something quite parisian in feel. i visited several holy christian sites and even met with an old friend who lives in palestine. this is a collection of shots from around the sites of jerusalem and the outlying christian towns near amman.
